Q&A: How does a nuclear power plant trace its energy all the way back to the sun?

January 12th, 2012

Question by : How does a nuclear power plant trace its energy all the way back to the sun?
I am looking for something like a simple diagram or something that shows the sun and how it turns into nuclear energy.

Best answer:

Answer by Edward
first of all, nuclear energy is created through nuclear fission aka the splitting of atoms. the atoms had to have come from the sun (or by small chance a meteorite).

the sun is capable of nuclear fission which is how we get more complex elements from the sun.

this is a very basic explanation of how our nuclear energy comes from the sun. it’s not prehistoric algae or ferns which give us Uranium 238

EDIT

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium

read the part under occurrence. mostly for Bobby’s education :)

And i should clarify that we do not get Uranium from *our* sun. but it came from the supernovas of some suns billions of years ago. :)

How often does a nuclear power plant get inspected?

December 19th, 2011

Question by victorian95: How often does a nuclear power plant get inspected?
How often does a nuclear power plant in Virginia get inspected? If a nuclear power plant was letting out too much radiation, would the plant be forced to close? Or would they just have to improve the plant? Can a nuclear power plant request extra inspections?
If you can, please list any sources that might be useful.

Q&A: Are there warnings for nuclear power plant leaks or meltdowns? What do you do if a warning is issued?

December 15th, 2011

Question by : Are there warnings for nuclear power plant leaks or meltdowns? What do you do if a warning is issued?
Do areas around nuclear power plants get some kind of warning if there is a leak or possibility of a meltdown? You know, kind of like when we get tornado warnings for tornadoes. What do you do if a warning is issued? I’m pretty sure there are warnings, because warnings sirens are installed around nuclear plants, but im not positive.

Best answer:

Answer by Todd
Yes, there are provisions in place for such an event (at least in the US). Notification may be made by reverse 911 calls, siren, local media, or by NOAA All Hazards Radio. When there is a problem, the local authority(s) having jurisdiction over the incident will advise you of the proper actions to take, such evacuating, or sheltering in place. If you are evacuated, they will likely have you go to predesignated facilities for this.

Q&A: How much Wind Turbines Does it take to Make the Energy in a Power Plant?

Question by Young Genuis: How much Wind Turbines Does it take to Make the Energy in a Power Plant?
How much Wind Turbines Does it take to Make the Energy in a Power Plant?

Best answer:

Answer by MTRstudent
Your question is confusing!

Do you mean: how many wind turbines does it take to produce the same power output as a power station?

The answer depends on a lot of things. Modern power stations vary in size. A ‘typical’ one is somewhere between 1000MW and 1600MW. (but you can get bigger ones – Drax is over 4000MW)

Wind turbines tend to be between 1.5MW and 3.6MW each, but 5MW models are being released this year and 7.5MW and 10MW ones are being researched.

So at maximum output, a 1600MW coal power station would require about 640 2.5MW turbines to match it. Or 320 of the new 5MW turbines.

The total amount of energy produced is different though; wind turbines on average only produce ~30% of their total possible output (ie their ‘capacity factor’ is about 30%). Nuclear power stations, because of their low marginal cost, tend to have a ‘capacity factor’ of 90% or so. Other power stations like coal and gas may be anywhere from 40-90%, but the US average is 55%:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/plugs/plepa00a.html

So a 1600MW coal power station will average 880MW output. You’d need almost 1200 2.5MW turbines to get the same average power output; or 600 new 5MW models.

Question by Lance John: what are the main components of a steam power plant?
is there any other names for “steam power plant”?
is steam generator is a name for “steam power plant”?

Best answer:

Answer by mike1942f
is steam generator is a name for “steam power plant”? No – a steam generator can just be a device for making steam – like for cleaning grease off of metal parts. However, it can be a short hand term for a power plant that generates power by steam.
Components
A source for pure water
Something to make steam – fire from coal, oil, or gas or heat from nuclear power or hydrothermal wells
Turbines with blades to be spun by the steam to get mechanical movement
Generators to be turned by the turbine.
Some way of cooling the pure water so it can be reused if needed.

Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant

July 16th, 2011

The Nesjavellir geothermal field is a high-enthalpy geothermal system within the Hengill area of SW-Iceland. Construction of the geothermal power plant began in 1987 and the first stage of the thermal plant was commissioned in 1990, following an intensive drilling and testing phase in the 1980s. The last 30 MWe turbine generator unit was commissioned in 2005. Mannvit Engineering of Iceland played a leading role in the design & development of the Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant, a combined heat and power plant.

Q&A: How much does a geothermal power plant cost?

May 1st, 2011

Question by Question Man: How much does a geothermal power plant cost?
I need to make a commercial for a school project about alternate energy sources. I have picked geothermal. I am needing every little bit of info if someone can get me a website with this info i would greatly appreciate it. My most important information would be how much one costs and how long does it averagely take to pay its self off.

Best answer:

Answer by Breath on the Wind
The initial cost of a facility will vary based upon installed KW ” around 00 per installed kW in the U.S., probably 00 to 00/kWe for a small (<1Mwe) power plant. Operating and maintenance costs range from .01 to .03 per kWh.” This is comparable to the cost of running a coal fired plant. But while most coal fired power plants have a capacity factor of about 75%, “most geothermal power plants can run at greater than 90% availability” 1
