Why are geothermal energy and solar energy power plants good alternatives,?

September 24th, 2011

Question by Cara: Why are geothermal energy and solar energy power plants good alternatives,?
but at the same time not always easy to have?

A. Both are nonpolluting and inexpensive to maintain, but their startup costs and limited locations make them difficult to have everywhere they might be needed.B. Geothermal energy may cause unwanted volcanic activity while solar energy is not useful unless the Sun is shining.C. The operating costs of both are too high.D. Geothermal energy can cause pollution, but both geothermal and solar energy are easy to capture.

Answer by Lennard Boehnke
If either is used by a private home, the energy supplying company will pay you for whatever extra power you have, if you send it to them.

How does geothermal energy not contradict the second law of thermodynamics?

August 13th, 2011

Question by Bobby: How does geothermal energy not contradict the second law of thermodynamics?
If entropy increases because of increasing amounts of heat, how does geothermal energy, which basically gets energy out of the heat in the earth, not contradict the second law of thermodynamics?

Best answer:

Answer by MarcThyme
The Second Law of Thermodynamics applies to a CLOSED system (like, for example, the Universe); the planet Earth is NOT a “closed system”, it is both receiving energy from and losing energy to the Universe around it….

Silly goose!

Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant

July 16th, 2011

The Nesjavellir geothermal field is a high-enthalpy geothermal system within the Hengill area of SW-Iceland. Construction of the geothermal power plant began in 1987 and the first stage of the thermal plant was commissioned in 1990, following an intensive drilling and testing phase in the 1980s. The last 30 MWe turbine generator unit was commissioned in 2005. Mannvit Engineering of Iceland played a leading role in the design & development of the Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant, a combined heat and power plant.

Geothermal Heat Pump Installation

July 13th, 2011

This is a Geothermal Heat Pump Installation done by Ingram’s Water & Air Equipment

The Geothermal Development Company says it will have completed drilling wells in the Menengai Crater in two years, meaning that this source of renewable power will come on-stream by 2013. The basin, which has potential to generate up to 1600MW of electricity, could solve Kenya’s perennial power problems, and help the country realise its recently-declared goal of full dependence on renewables by 2017.

Where can geothermal power plants be built?

May 28th, 2011

Question by zeroline: Where can geothermal power plants be built?
Some require steam vents or on something called ‘geothermal fields’ but can they be constructed elsewhere? Please anything will help. I’m doing a research paper that involves adding geothermal plants to PPL Energy, an energy company in the Ohio/Pennsylvania area.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK would be a beautiful place for a huge geo plant, wouldnt you agree? just think of all of those wasted BTUs…talk about becoming green and energy independent. Man just think….

drill deep enough and you’ll find it to be quite warm a few miles down (ok maybe more than a few) , even in january in PA

Will Iceland stop using Geothermal power?

May 6th, 2011

Question by Björn Þór Jónsson: Will Iceland stop using Geothermal power?
Hi, I was reading National Geographic about Icelands power struggle, and it said that they dont the big pipes that carry the steam, and they dont want to drill in to the crust, so does this mean that Iceland will stop using Geothermal and start using coal? If so, that would be bad, coal is bad.
