Direct Electricity from a fission power plant?

December 5th, 2010
Comments Off

Question by Chris: Direct Electricity from a fission power plant?
Instead of using a steam turbine to generate power in a nuclear reactor. Why not ionize the fission fuel, then the fission fragments that get spit out after a fission reaction could be turned directly into electrical energy at about 80% efficiency. I’ve heard that this would be the best way to extract energy from the proton-boron 11 fusion reaction, so why not try something like this for fission.

Best answer:

Answer by David D
Sounds wacky. The amount of electrical energy in the ionized fragments is minuscule compared to the energy released in the form of gamma rays and neutron recoil energy.

Which generates more electricity, coal or nuclear fission power plants?

October 10th, 2010

Question by MrProgramX: Which generates more electricity, coal or nuclear fission power plants?
I was playing a game called “Eco Tycoon Project Green”, and in the game the coal power plants put out twice as much power as the nuclear fission ones. That doesn’t seem right to me, but is it actually true?

Best answer:

Answer by billrussell42
per plant?

In the US, Nuclear plants are in the range of 200 MW to 1.2 GW
Coal plants range from 500 MW to 3.5 GW

How many nuclear power plants would need to be in the US to be the main source of electricity?

October 1st, 2010

Question by Chaos: How many nuclear power plants would need to be in the US to be the main source of electricity?
France gets almost 80% of its electricity from nuclear power plants but it is a small country, so how many power plants would the US need to get around 80-90% of its electricity from nuclear power.

Best answer:

Answer by Beep
Freshman year of college, I was big into the whole let’s-use-nuclear-power for everything. I did the research and wrote a big report on it.

Turns out here’s a bummer:
If we ran everything on nuclear power for the next 12 years, assuming 100% efficiency (which is beyond us) and use of some fuels which we can’t currently harness, we’ll still be out of nuclear fuel by the end of that period.

Like fossil fuels, nuclear fuels are stuff we pull out of the dirt. Once they’re used, they’re used, and that’s it for them.

Hypothetically, we can get fusion going at some point, like our sun does, but that technology isn’t what our current nuclear power plants run on today; that is also beyond us. However, it is a very likely choice for power generation at some point in the future (although probably not the immediate future).

Deng Ltd, Ghana, Solar electricity for rural communities – Ashden Award winner

September 24th, 2010

This video can be downloaded here: www.ashdenawards.org Deng won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2007. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog ashdenawards.blogspot.com Deng Ltd, an established engineering company in Accra, has developed a viable and sustainable business model for the provision of solar-home-systems to rural areas where access to grid electricity is limited. Deng has done this by venturing out of the capital and setting up a network of dealers to service the more remote areas. Deng has also set up a training centre for solar technicians in order to further expand the business and ensure the future sustainability of the scheme. The training centre, which has already trained 120 people from various sectors, is in itself a significant driver for growth of the solar PV market in Ghana. Whilst Deng does sell and install PV-powered grid backup systems around Accra, the mission and focus of Deng is in providing solar electricity to rural areas that do not have grid access. Since 1998 Deng has supplied 1000 fixed systems and 6000 solar lanterns to communities across Ghana.

Is it true that an item left plugged into an outlet will still continuously pull electricity when its not on?

August 4th, 2010

Any item from a light/lamp, fan, electronics, appliances, etc. If it is only plugged in but not on, does it in fact pull electricity still and if so how much? Does it make an actual impact on your monthly bill? Would it be good in conserving energy to unplug these types of items when not in use?
Maybe another way to word it, will it continue to use electricity (pull) even though the item is not turned on and is only plugged in?

I ask this because recently on our companies internal internet page they asked what if anything, people were doing to conserve energy, protect the environment, etc. Just as part of the question of the week type set up. Someone answered that they were unplugging items that weren’t being used so as to not continue to use electricity since the item was off. Just curious.

Could space heaters REALLY affect the electricity bill THIS MUCH?

August 2nd, 2010

The most I had ever paid for an electric bill prior to this was 70 for a 3-month period (2-person apartment connected to central heating). Last month I moved to a 1-person place that is NOT connected to central heating (instead uses 3 electric space heaters). I don’t have many appliances and I try to conserve electricity whenever I can, but this month my bill was 135 for the same 3-month period!!!

I realize that space heaters are inefficient for energy use, but can they really affect my energy bill in such a drastic way???

Why is it when we use less electricity, that we have to pay more?

July 31st, 2010

If it’s not bad enough with the gas prices, does that mean the electricity has to blow a fuse too. I personally think that the power companies would make a lot more if they would charge more if you use more and less is you use less. Everyone is screaming CONSERVE, CONSERVE, but yet when we conserve we are finiancially punished. I am tired of corperate companies thinking that they can rule the roost, persay, cause if in wasn’t for us, the consumer, they would be just twildling their thumbs. Thanks for your time. Just wanted to know if I am the only one that is feeling the Burn of the power co.

Few questions on electricity (Please check my answers)?

July 29th, 2010

1. How is electricity for houses generated at the power plant?
My answer: At thermal power stations where heated water turns into steam which rotates a steam turbine, driving the electrical generator.

2. How is that electricity transferred? How can you estimate the voltage of a power line by looking at it?
My answer: Through power lines. (Not sure about 2nd part of question)

3. What is the name of an electrical device that changes the voltage from power company from high voltage to low voltage? Does that device work from both AC and DC?
My answer: Transformers. Yes it works for both AC and DC.

Im not sure if all my answers are right. thank you guys for checking and could you also provide me with the correct answer if i made a mistake?
