What happens to the byproduct of hydrogen fuel cells in a space craft?

October 30th, 2011

Question by Joshua Cloud: What happens to the byproduct of hydrogen fuel cells in a space craft?
I have a project on hydrogen fuel cells and read that they use them in american space crafts. But i was wondering where does the water go and what happens to it?

Answer by Bill
its exhuast, it cant be re collected, at least not 100 percent

a rocket engine runs on liquid oxygen, and hydrogen gas, when the burn its like burning gasoline but stronger and it has no carbon. its an external combustion engine though, that means all the reaction takes place outside the engine, or that the energy is vented straight out of the engine

so all exhuast is just left, they could use some type of collector i suppose to reclaim the water, but it wouldnt be efficent

Build Solar Panels DIY – How to Solder the solar cells part 4 Solar Cell Mounting.

October 3rd, 2011

This step works well for resins that are less expensive and do not tolerate extensive UV exposure. The tape filters the UV and also locks the cells in place. There are several UV resistant Duct Tapes and other power adhesive tapes on the market. I like standard White Strapping Tape

Q&A: how much % of light coming in to solar cells is changed to electricty?

Question by hi: how much % of light coming in to solar cells is changed to electricty?
the efficency of a solar cell

Best answer:

Answer by roderick_young
From Wikipedia:

Solar cell efficiencies vary from 6% for amorphous silicon-based solar cells to 40.7% with multiple-junction research lab cells and 42.8% with multiple dies assembled into a hybrid package.[26] Solar cell energy conversion efficiencies for commercially available multicrystalline Si solar cells are around 14-19%.[27] The highest efficiency cells have not always been the most economical — for example a 30% efficient multijunction cell based on exotic materials such as gallium arsenide or indium selenide and produced in low volume might well cost one hundred times as much as an 8% efficient amorphous silicon cell in mass production, while only delivering about four times the electrical power.

And my comment: after the cells are put into practical panels, subtract another few % of efficiency. So 14% would be pretty typical for a crystalline panel you buy on the open market.

Do cations move to the cathode and anions to the anode in all electrochemical cells or just electrolytic?

April 28th, 2011

Question by annie: Do cations move to the cathode and anions to the anode in all electrochemical cells or just electrolytic?
I know that oxidation occurs at the anode and reduction at the cathode for all types of electrochemical cells, but I’m not sure about the migration of cations and anions?

Best answer:

Answer by TLV ×
A widespread misconception is that anode polarity is always positive (+). This is often incorrectly inferred from the correct fact that in all electrochemical devices negatively charged anions move towards the anode (hence their name) and/or positively charged cations move away from it. In fact anode polarity depends on the device type, and sometimes even in which mode it operates, as per the above electric current direction-based universal definition. Consequently, as can be seen from the following examples, in a device which consumes power the anode is positive, and in a device which provides power the anode is negative

Hydrogen fuel cells have been considered an alternative for a clean source of energy. In a fuel cell, hydrogen?

Question by Jose: Hydrogen fuel cells have been considered an alternative for a clean source of energy. In a fuel cell, hydrogen?
Hydrogen fuel cells have been considered an alternative for a clean source of energy. In a fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce water, and at the same time, it releases a great deal of energy. Write an essay that addresses the chemical reaction of hydrogen fuel cells, the energy that is available from this reaction, and whether this type of alternative fuel is feasible. Be complete and use examples to support your statements

Answer by Colin
Talk about the possiblities of space travel because of hydrogen fuel. Talk about the possibilites for cars powered by water! Just talk about really neat things that can be done with hydrogen power.
