argue for or against the following plan: The public controversy about greenhouse gases?

February 3rd, 2012

Question by : argue for or against the following plan: The public controversy about greenhouse gases?
argue for or against the following plan:

The public controversy about greenhouse gases is too crisis-oriented and off to one side of more important issues, namely a.) the long-term economic potential of renewable energy generation, b.) the dangers of social instability from rich-poor polarization in developing countries, and c.) dangers of corruption of governments of developing countries by a handful of more and more powerful global corporations.

Since no force available can stop or slow down the most rapid possible industrial development in countries like China, Mexico and India, those fearful of long-term harm to the environment should not waste their energies in controversies based in uncertain science. Rather, all should settle on the single goal of quickly developing cost-effective solar, wind, tidal and geothermal power and getting decentralized generation of such power into place everywhere. ‘Politics’ should be put aside in order to accomplish this.

A World Energy Authority similar in some respects to the United Nations should be formed with the express mission of providing detailed planning for rapid transition to decentralized generation of renewable power in every country. This Authority would also provide scientific research and industrial planning. So great is the latent support for such an Authority, provided it remain ‘non-political’ and single-mission focused, that it would only have to open an office and begin to publicize concrete plans for each country for massive support to flow to it. The Authority’s work would capture the imaginations of tens of thousands of young people in the industrialized countries who could do much of the labor associated with establishing thousands of small generation projects. Use of fossil fuel would continue until it became too expensive.

Publicly subsidized, decentralized generation of cheap power world-wide might ‘kill three birds with one stone.’ No plan could be more effective against poverty created by industrial development in very poor countries. This plan would also co-opt more far-sighted corporations who would be hired in the projects, rather than polarizing many in opposition to more stringent controls on emissions, as is presently the case.

Renewable energy generation is potentially cheaper than generation with fossil fuels. There’s no bill for sunshine! Despite imposing capital requirements, pioneering companies could reasonably expect to reap huge profits as sale of super-efficient batteries and photo-voltaic cells, for example, became as common as sale of gasoline is now. What is lacking is a developed, fully-rationalized and well-publicized plan for every country to put decentralized generation in place. As to greenhouse gases, we should aggressively study the climate until we really understand this very complex system.

Argument against:
The “plan” contains a remarkable and odd collection of false assumptions, impractical ideas, and anti-democratic ideas. Namely.

False assumptions in the plan:

The controversy about climate change is “crisis oriented.” False. The crisis exists mostly in the rhetoric of the contrarians who keep shouting that the scientists of the world are creating a false crisis. In fact scientists are trying to present us with information so that we can take steps to avoid a real crisis in the future.

The science is of climate change is “uncertain.” False. The only uncertainties about climate change are in matters of degree and details. There is ample evidence of warming and man’s responsibility for it. For summaries see these sites from NOAA and NASA:
from NOAA and NASA

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/indicators/

http://climate.nasa.gov/

Virtually every organization of scientists on the planet and every scientific publication agrees. There are only a handful of contrarians. You may wish to consider the opinion of the British Royal Society

http://royalsociety.org/climate-change-summary-of-science/

And the opinion of the editors of Science Magazine

http://www.sciencemag.org/content/326/5960/1646.full

Impractical Ideas in the “plan”

Renewable energy generation is “potentially cheaper” than generation with fossil fuels.
This is impractical except maybe in the very long run. There is no evidence that renewable energy is going to become cheap within our lifetimes.

Put aside politics to accomplish the plan. Impractical. Politics is the process by which governments function. There is no alternative method available. We can’t just join hands and sing. Elected representatives of citizens need to meet exchange ideas and goals, and reach compromise solutions. There have always been arguments among competing factions. We have mechanisms to deal with the arguments and resolve them (see U.S. Constitution and Federalist Papers #10 – James Madison).

Anti-democratic ideas in the “plan.”
Creation of a “World Energy Authority” is probably the worst part of this “plan.” The people of the world have never shown any wish to give up their control of their own countries to a world government or anything approaching a world government. A modern democratic republic with a government of elected officials and legislators is imperfect, but in a contest for “best form of government” it is far ahead of whatever is in second place.

I suggest that the “plan” is really just a conservative stalking horse that provides an excuse to do nothing. The author of the plan knows that it would never be adopted, and should not be adopted, but it provides a good talking point — “Those liberals want to enslave you to a world government.”
No. We don’t want a world government any more than the conservatives do.

all permanent magnet motor use electricity by rapping copper coils around iron core to make an electromagnet that have the same property as permanent once (N and S pole )
so this electromagnet is from out side called stator and the magnet rotor is repelled from outside electromagnet . that’s all

There is no such thing as a magnetic engine.

There is no research because it is impossible, it violates the basic laws of physics.

The Energy Non-Crisis- Lindsay Williams -Truth about Oil and Oil prices

August 31st, 2011

READ and DOWNLOAD “The Energy-Non Crisis” here: www.reformation.org Lindsey Williams, who has been an ordained Baptist minister for 28 years, went to Alaska in 1971 as a missionary. The Trans-Alaska oil pipeline began its construction phase in 1974, and because of Mr. Williams’ love for his country and concern for the spiritual welfare of the “pipelines,” he volunteered to serve as Chaplain on the pipeline, with the subsequent full support of the Alyeska Pipeline Company. Because of the executive status accorded to him as Chaplain, he was given access to information documented in his eye opening book, The Energy Non-Crisis. After numerous public speaking engagements in the western states, certain government officials and concerned individuals urged Mr. Williams to put into print what he saw and heard, stating that they felt this information was vital to national security. Mr. Williams firmly believes that whoever controls energy controls the economy. Thus, The Energy Non-Crisis.

I have a question about ethnicity. I mean no insult, I am most serious.?

August 27th, 2011

Question by valentina: I have a question about ethnicity. I mean no insult, I am most serious.?
They are hateful about it. It is my HEALTH. I am not ashamed. I was proud of my parents. My Mom had black hair which
glinted blue in the sun. She had dark skin, very brown eyes. No body hair except under her arms, pubic area. I am not talking disrespectfully of my mother. I lovedher.
Dad was mixed German/Jewish, and maybe other. He had light hair. Grey eyes. I have green eyes,
lighter skin, and blond hair. Now greying platinum
and silver. I am told green eyes , genetically are the same as brown eyes.

In reading, years ago, they always said American
Natives had no beards or body hair, yet they say
they pulled out their beards and body hair. Which is true? I do not recall the
Blacks I knew having leg or arm hair, yet they had
chest hair.

Am I off base here. Does body hair have ethnic
implications.

I would like to know my ethnicity for reasons of pride,
for reasons of health. I have a terrible lactose intolerance which I have had since a child. No one
would tell me what it was. It was funny to them. I suffered horribly from this. When my second child was born and I went on WW, started drinking skim milk
(I never drank milk, it made me very sick) I began having almost terminal diarrhea, no one would tell me anything. I stopped drinking milk again, or eating dairy.
The low fat dairy kills me. So….I take ca when I can.
The supplements do not help. I developed a colon
problem on top of this. There are genetic lactose
intolerances, then there are acquired intolerances.
I have both.

I can eat cheese. Oddly enough, it does not bother me.
Some. I could eat yogurt. Now I cannot eat the low fat
yogurt, suddenly. I can eat some of the regular.

Please tell me about ethnicity and body hair.
Get a life, don’t be insulted. I am me, and I have
ethnic origins. No one would be ashamed of me at all
if they knew the truth. I am not a scud missile.
I want to know about lactose intolerances and racial issues, ethnicity. I cannot find what I want to know
in the books, they are so delicate.

I had stroke level BP at one time, no one would tell
me. I found out by accident. My parents had H
BP, both. My son does. My son has blond hair like
me, my daughter has the coloring of her Dad, who
by the way had a black haired Mom with dark skin
just like mine.

HELP.

I can’t help you with this one, but I suggest you contact a name university with an anthropology department and see if they can help. I know that some First Nation people have facial hair, but whether they are genetically pure or mixed I don’t know. I have also heard that lactose intolerance is ethnically connected. Its a user on this pregnancy site that got angry and twisted my words because i guess she wanted people to feel bad for her and to make more friends and to make people bash me. It all started because she suppose to have 9 children and she was listed on my friends list and i keep seeing her add pictures of her daughter willow and adding blogs about her daughter willow and adding videos of her daughter willow so like anyone else i asked her how come she dont talk or post pictures of her other children? and she got upset and told people i called her fake when i even showed everyone the messages i sent her and i even asked people what they think and so she rubbed it in my face that she reported me and she cursed me out and everything along with her friend calling me nasty names and talking about my son and they would delete there comments….so me thinking oh well she reported me i dont care because i didnt do nothing wrong. So i come from school to find out my profile been deleted along with my son birth story and pictures etc and i was upset along with girls who knew me so i made a new profile and ask the administrator and she said how she known the girl and how i did call her fake and i was rude OK!! that really pissed me off because i knew i wasnt and to top that all off the girl is still keeping it going and if i say anything ill be deleted again… what should i do? and plus this not the first time this girl did this to a user.

Thinking Critically about Sustainable Energy – Nuclear Energy

May 24th, 2011

Gus Nathan, Kim Talus and Barry Brook discuss concept of nuclear energy. Could nuclear power be the only non-carbon-emitting technology capable of meeting the world’s growing energy requirements while reducing carbon emissions? Today’s proponents argue that improvements in reactor design have made them safer as well as more fuel-efficient and cost-competitive to build, compared with coal plants. Will the next generation of reactors make nuclear the clean, green option? Listen to our panel and make up your own mind.

Speakers: Bob Bingham; Joe Kaplinsky; Michael Massey; Alexandra Penn Chair: Rob Clowes For several decades now, the possibility of nuclear fusion — producing energy by joining atomic nuclei rather than splitting them — has held the promise of cheap and clean power for all, without the waste produced by existing fission technology. But somehow fusion is rarely high on the agenda in debates about the future of energy. Arguably, recent technical innovations indicate a working fusion reactor is now a realisable project in the medium term. Several major projects – such as the European HiPER project — now exist with the goal of advancing this dream over the next ten years. Yet, perhaps surprisingly, the promise of cheap clean energy has not been universally welcomed. Some argue we have been here before, and the technological promise will simply not pan out. Others that the dream of fusion is an unwelcome and unrealistic mirage that encourages us to ignore the problems of climate change. How close is this technology, and what does the current climate of thinking on fusion research tell us about today’s attitudes to energy? What part, if any, could or should fusion play in the future development of our society.

The fractional change of mass to energy in a fission reactor is about 0.1% or 1 part in a thousand. For each k?

March 26th, 2011
Comments Off

Question by Katelynn Felder: The fractional change of mass to energy in a fission reactor is about 0.1% or 1 part in a thousand. For each k?
The fractional change of mass to energy in a fission reactor is about 0.1% or 1 part in a thousand. For each kilogram of uranium that undergoes fission, how much energy is released? If energy costs three cents per mega joule, how much is this energy worth in dollars?

Best answer:

Answer by Corinna
1kg X 0.1= 0.1kg

0.1 kg = 100,000 mg

1 mg = 90,000,000,000 joules

100,000mg = 9,000,000,000,000,000 joules

9,000,000,000,000,000 / 1,000,000= 9,000,000,000 megajoules

If energy is 3 cents per million joules or megajoule

This would cost….

9,000,000,000 X 3 cents=

27,000,000,000 cents

If 100 cents = 1 dollar……

Then we are looking at 0,000,000

Why wasn’t the public told earlier about Top Kill?

Question by gws35: Why wasn’t the public told earlier about Top Kill?
Why was the public kept in the dark about Top Kill, while the oil companies tried to save the oil with a big box that didn’t work?

It seemed like Obama cared more about saving the oil than he was in saving the environment from the biggest oil spill in history.

Obama said he was calling the shots from the beginning of the diaster response. When will he explain this decision?

If the public knew about Top Kill from the beginning, don’t you think the public would have demanded to use it, instead of some big box?

the rotating mirrors being made from the oort cloud then as the mirrors rotate around the two stars then a solar sail could use the gravity and also the mirrors for photon acceleration
so the solar sail couldnt be making acceleration figure eight around the two stars…(forget about the prima Centuri actually would be the launch pad)

the mirrors would be non exsistant because it would take time for the actual gravitational exsistance of the stars to hit the mirrors and bounce back,by that time the stars would have moved and the gravitional pull would no longer be there. The mirros wouldnt nessicaraly be non ecistant, but they wouldnt have a purpose at all.
