Q&A: Do you think it will be possible to fly aircraft on pure biofuel?

December 6th, 2011

Question by Handsolo: Do you think it will be possible to fly aircraft on pure biofuel?
I’m not asking because i’m incredibly green, but i’ve been reading about how the military has been running tests with 50/50 of JP-8 and Biofuel. Could aircraft fly purely on plant power one day? What goes into making biofuel like that?
Also, i’m not concerned with environmental impacts of using plants for fuel. I’m just asking if it’s potentially possible to make a jet fuel using just plant material.

An increased focus on reducing fossil fuel usage to minimize climate change has propelled aircraft manufacturers to investigate the use of biofuels. Biofuels are providing reasons for the aviation industry to be hopeful, as a means of achieving sustainability. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has recently given the preliminary approval to the blending of 50% biofuels produced from algal, jatropha, municipal waste and other cellulosic feedstocks in aviation fuels. Final approval is expected in July 2011. Lufthansa and Airbus are expected to begin a six-month commercial trial of a 50 percent biofuel blend, on four flights per day operating between Frankfurt and London. Bioenterprise works with a company who produces biofuel from agricultural crop residues and waste, and purpose-grown cellulosic feedstock. With the recent surge of aviation biofuel interest, perhaps there’s an opportunity to vertically integrate.

What emissions are produced by burning biofuel?

September 26th, 2011

Question by Gee4God: What emissions are produced by burning biofuel?
What emissions does ethanol biofuel produce (or products) thanks :)
and do these emissions cause air pollution and do they also contribute to greenhouse effect, acid rain and ocean acidification?

Best answer:

Answer by Irv S
Ethanol is a carbohydrate, [C2H5(OH)], right?
Its oxidation will produce CO2 and H2O, both of which
are ‘greenhouse gasses’.
It’s oxidation in air at higher temperatures can also produce some
oxides of the nitrogen in the air, [N2O, and NO2], which do
form acids when dissolved in rain.
Note that CO2 is also an acid an-hydride gas.
CO2 + H2O < ------> H2CO3 (carbonic acid).

Watch the engines churn and look into the flight deck as test pilots fly the new Boeing 747-8 Freighter on the first-ever transatlantic biofuel flight with a commercial jetliner. The airplane glided above the clouds, flying at Mach .85, one of the fastest cruising speeds for commercial airplanes. The successful flight marks a major environmental milestone for the aviation and fuels the hopes of an industry searching for an alternative answer to power growth.

‘Green genes’ in yeast may boost biofuel production by increasing stress tolerance
An effort to increase biofuel production has led scientists to discover genes in yeast that improve their tolerance to ethanol, allowing the production of more ethanol from the same amount of nutrients. A new study shows how genetically altered yeast cells survive higher ethanol concentrations, addressing a bottleneck in the production of ethanol from cellulosic material (nonfood plant sources …
