Subsidies for Renewables, Biofuels Dwarfed by Supports for Fossil Fuels
NEW YORK—-New research from Bloomberg New Energy Finance reveals that despite many platitudes and pledges, governments of the world are spending substantially more on subsidizing dirty forms of energy than on renewables and biofuels.

STIRLING ENGINE ELECTRIC GENERATOR SOLAR POWER FRESNEL LENS No Load Test

July 31st, 2010

www.greenpowerscience.com This is a small 24v DC geared motor I attached to one of our Small Stirling Engines using plumbing fixtures for a mount. This is a NO LOAD TEST. The maximum voltage was 22v DC and the estimate was 300 mA. So this can produce about 6.5 watts with this simple setup. I am working on a more efficient process. Due to the weather, NO LOADS were tested today but I have tested some LEDs and small DC motors with good results. I will expand this test when we get better sunny days. Summers in the Sunshine State are 150 days of clouds:-)

Can one buy wind deflectors for solar panels?

July 31st, 2010

I’ve installed some solar panels near the ground, but even though they’re protected from the wind, snow is building up on them. I’d like to install some deflectors to channel the wind up and over the back end of the panels so that less snow builds up on the surface. The strip of panels is about 70′ long.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

Why is it when we use less electricity, that we have to pay more?

July 31st, 2010

If it’s not bad enough with the gas prices, does that mean the electricity has to blow a fuse too. I personally think that the power companies would make a lot more if they would charge more if you use more and less is you use less. Everyone is screaming CONSERVE, CONSERVE, but yet when we conserve we are finiancially punished. I am tired of corperate companies thinking that they can rule the roost, persay, cause if in wasn’t for us, the consumer, they would be just twildling their thumbs. Thanks for your time. Just wanted to know if I am the only one that is feeling the Burn of the power co.

I’m from Alabama, what’s the deal with energy “conservation”?

July 31st, 2010

I don’t understand all of these liberals talking about saving energy and being GREEN. Why is that so important? Why would God give us all of this sweet nectar for our f-350s? The ground is FULL of oil and natural gas, we should use it. Do you think that saving energy will do anything but give those hippie nutjobs something to inject peyote and smoke their grass about?

Wind and Solar power generation……?

July 31st, 2010

A simple question, hopefully with a simple answer.

I need to generate 10,000,000kWh per year via wind and solar power.
With 8760 hours in the year, please presume 2500 full hours of good wind.
How many turbines do I need and of what rating? What is the most efficient set up?
At peak operation I need to generate a minimum of 370,000 kWh per month.
For the solar power I have 10,000 metre2 of available space.

The numbers may look big, but they are all correct, this is a serious question.

Thanks in advance.

If any of you work for a wind turbine/solar panel manufacturer/installer and want to discuss this, please email me your professional email address and I will contact you via that.

What about Bush not signing the clean air act of the Kyoto Protocal. Is this stupidity on purpose or what?

July 31st, 2010

Is Bush sooooo blind to see the truth about Global Warming or is he part of the Oil Conspiracy to prolong the burning of fossil fuel and just cover their eyes with money and let the planet go th $#!+.

Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell Vehicle – Kelley Blue Book’s Review

July 31st, 2010

FOR MORE CAR VIDEOS & REVIEWS CHECK OUT: www.kbb.com As global warming concerns and emission standards threaten vehicle production in the United States, General Motors is exhaustively researching alternative-fuel technologies, including Hydrogen Fuel Cells. A fuel cell creates electricity to power an electric motor via an electrochemical reaction, utilizing Hydrogen (created from water through electrolysis). GM has chosen to showcase its Hydrogen Fuel Cell system in its crossover SUV, the Chevrolet Equinox — bucking the anti-SUV trend by creating a vehicle that can carry the entire family and its cargo all while emitting nothing but water from the tailpipe. Currently Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Vehicles are only available through the Project Driveway Program — a user trial designed to collect as much information as possible from drivers and onboard data collectors. GM hopes to use this data to one day incorporate Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology into other vehicles. Check out the video below to learn all about the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Vehicle with kbb’s Video Production Editor Beth Lear-VanderYacht. Alternative experiments to back up results collected for: H2O2 —> 2H2O + 02?

July 31st, 2010

I have been doing the investigation on how temperature affects the rate of reaction, using hydrogen peroxide and peas. With the equation being: H2O2 —> 2H2O + 02.

I was wondering whether there is another experiment i would be able to do which would collaborate and help me check my existing results?

Thanks

Donning PPE at the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Cleanup Red Bag Area in Valdez Alaska 1989

July 31st, 2010
Comments Off

The usual PPE for this area was a set of rain gear, oil resistant gloves and boots duct tapped to the rain gear and a hard hat and chemical eye protection. Plastic bags containing oily waste, generated during the cleanup, were processed at this facility, also known as the Dayville site. Up to 50 day-shift workers and 20 night-shift workers sorted the bags, separating out those that did not contain oily waste for transport to a sanitary landfill. Those that contained oily waste were doublebagged and moved to a holding area at the site for subsequent transport to other hazardous waste landfills. The workers sorting the bags wore PPE for protection from the oil contents of the bags which frequently were torn open during handling or broke open because they were not sealed securely. Several foremen, members of the Alaska Laborers Union, had completed their unions 40-hour HAZWOPER class and convinced their employer to let them build a decontamination line, which was not present when the site was established. They built a wonderful decon area with lots of extras, like enclosed areas for protection from the wind and rain and boot dryers with warm air. Everyone used this decon after their 12 hour shift, unlike many of the other decons on the spill which were by-passed by most workers and supervisors. For more information on this cleanup, go to the Laborers Union public health team report at the NIEHS Oil Spill website (under Other Oil Spill Resources) at tools.niehs.nih.gov and

The Three Mile Island Accident (Part 4)

July 31st, 2010

Three Mile Island has been of interest to human factors engineers as an example of how groups of people react to and make decisions under stress. There is now a general consensus that the accident was exacerbated by wrong decisions made because the operators were overwhelmed with information, much of it irrelevant, misleading or incorrect. As a result of the TMI-2 incident, nuclear reactor operator training has been improved. Before the incident it focused on diagnosing the underlying problem; afterward, it focused on reacting to the emergency by going through a standardized checklist to ensure that the core is receiving enough coolant under sufficient pressure. In addition to the improved operating training, improvements in quality assurance, engineering, operational surveillance and emergency planning have been instituted. Improvements in control room habitability, “sight lines” to instruments, ambiguous indications and even the placement of “trouble” tags were made; some trouble tags were covering important instrument indications during the accident. Improved surveillance of critical systems, structures and components required for cooling the plant and mitigating the escape of radionuclides during an emergency were also implemented. In addition, each nuclear site needed to have an approved emergency plan to direct the evacuation of the public within a ten mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ); and to facilitate rapid notification and evacuation. This plan is periodically
